How has Runshaw helped to support you?
I have always struggled with English and wanted to improve it for future careers and to assist my children. Visiting an open event at Runshaw, I found it really welcoming and it didn’t feel intimidating. It had a family feel.
I felt at home on the course and everyone was so welcoming. The teachers’ main aim is for you to pass. You will not fail to have help and guidance and extra help is available if you need it, in class and online.
If you are committed and organised you’ll achieve your goal.

Functional Skills courses aim to build on your current skills and to focus on the skills needed to help you succeed in everyday work and social situations. In English, we look at communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In Maths we learn how to calculate percentages for work or balance your personal finances, and will focus on practical maths skills used in everyday life. Both courses are available at two levels (Level 1 & 2). The awarding body for the courses is City & Guilds (C&G).

How have your tutors helped support your studies?
“The teachers are so good at their job and amazingly knowledgeable. They teach in a way that makes you absorb the information and they are very, very approachable.
The teaching at Runshaw really makes a difference as the tutors go the extra mile. I felt like a person, not a number. I thought I was too old to study, but having a dedicated adult site is really appealing.”
The study of Social Sciences opens up diverse opportunities in areas such as the criminal justice system: HM courts and tribunal service; welfare services; the police, prison and probation services; youth and community work; and local government. For those wishing to pursue a career in Psychology, career paths may include: clinical, health, sport, forensic and neuropsychology.

What would you recommend about Runshaw to a friend?
I honesty would. The teachers really care about helping you succeed. They have helped me become the best teaching assistant I can be. Online learning has actually been a real success.
Covid has required lessons to be over Zoom or Teams and it’s worked out really well. We participate as we would in class. It’s a good place to study as an adult.
If you are looking for a rewarding career, then training to become a Teaching Assistant is exciting, fulfilling and provides the unique opportunity to help support and inspire young children at the very start of their educational career.

What do you like about your course?
Our teacher is fantastic, I cannot rate her highly enough. She goes above, is very person centred and has a lot of different teaching methods, including discussion, practice sessions and the use of video recordings. She marks our work straight away and gives full and constructive feedback. She is approachable and extremely knowledgeable. This course is a great opportunity to progress to Level 4 and a career in counselling.
