    Functional Skills English courses aim to build on your current skills and to focus on the skills needed to help you succeed in everyday work and social situations. They look at communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening and are available at three levels (Entry Level 3, Level 1 & 2). The awarding body for the course is Edexcel.

    You will study this course at the Strawberry Fields Hub in Chorley for Level 1 and Entry level for daytime lessons. Click here to view map.

    You will study this course at our Leyland Campus for Level 1 and Entry level for evening lessons.

    Functional Skills English courses focus on reading, technical writing skills and planning and creating a range of personal and work documents such as letters, blogs and forum posts. The course will also develop confidence in your speaking and listening skills. Task based activities will allow you to practise these in everyday scenarios.

    Your progress will be regularly reviewed with your tutor.

    You will work individually, in pairs, small groups or as a whole class in order to consolidate the skills and knowledge taught. You will need to do approximately 3 hours of directed study per week in your own time.

    LEVEL 1 / 2 – Course starts Tuesday 5th September:

    • Level 1: Tuesdays 17:30-20:30 or Thursdays 09:30-12:30
    • Level 2: Tuesdays 13:30-16:30 or Thursdays 17:30-20:30

     

    LEVEL 3 – Course starts Thursday 7th September:

    • Thursdays – 09:30-12:30

  • Equipment Required

    Please bring a pen, A4 lined paper and an A4 ring binder to the first session.

  • Entry Requirements

    Prior to enrolment you will need to undertake a BKSB assessment to ensure you are enrolled on to the right level.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Courses are externally assessed by:

    • a reading paper
    • a writing paper
    • Speaking & Listening

    Speaking & Listening for Entry Level qualifications are internally assessed.

  • Progression Pathway

    On successful completion of the course you will receive an Edexcel Functional Skills qualification in English at either Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2. You may then progress to the next level Functional Skills English course, or to other further education courses.
